Rainbow Kueh Lapises

May 19, 2010

Somewhere over the rainbow, it rains in the west and shines in the east. No wonder rainbow is interpreted differently by people of different areas. (Just like Southern Chinese lions with baby-doll eyes, Northern Chinese lions resembling a shaggy dog.)

From left: Lapis Sagu from Subway Niche (SGD 0.80), Kueh Lapis from Nyonya Bistro (SGD 0.80), Rainbow Lapis from Chilli Padi Takeaway (SGD 1.00)

Subway Niche got it correct, the fantasy-theme beginning from red to purple. (I could recite along with the 7 layers.) Nyonya Bistro had its own interpretation, focusing on 1-and a-half rainbow: the 2 joints where red fuses with purple again. Chilli Padi omitted the red, giving it a spunky dressing-down in white.

P.S. When you cannot mix it, (the colours of the rainbow becomes a raw umber when mixed in paint or white; in optical light) stack it. When I am eating kueh lapis, it is akin to eating a thousand hands and a thousand pastries.
